Actuarial Tips, Data Tricks, and LEGO Bricks: Intro to My Blog

Welcome to my blog - Where actuarial science collides with data analytics—and a passion for LEGO bricks! I’m not sure how you found this page—whether through a link, a random Google search, or an accident—but I’m really glad you did.

This is the first post on my blog, so I’ll be giving you a quick tour of what kind of content you can expect here and whether it’s for you—or if you’d rather scroll away to watch some memes (no judgment). I’ll also share a bit about myself so you know who’s behind the keyboard.

Who Am I?

I’m Eryk, a data analyst currently working at Verisk in Krakow, Poland. I graduated this year with a degree in Economic Analytics from the Krakow University of Economics. During my studies and my career as a data analyst, I got interested in actuarial science. That interest grew into a serious pursuit of actuarial credentials—both Polish and CAS. I’m still at the beginning of this journey, with two exams under my belt and another one lined up for December.

But hey, life isn’t all about data and exams. When I’m not deep in spreadsheets or exam problems, you’ll find me at the gym, taking contemporary dance classes, or building with LEGO bricks. Sometimes, some photo sessions of minifigures could also appear (which example is Frodo’s picture attached).

I’m also a reader of fantasy books (yes, I’m a Tolkien fan, but I swear I read other authors too!), popular science books, and biographies.

Why This Blog?

The purpose of this blog is to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for actuarial science and data analytics. My goal is to help others navigate the challenges of preparing for actuarial exams, provide tips and tricks to make studying more effective and demystify the field of actuarial science. Whether you’re preparing for your exam, working as a data analyst in the insurance industry, or simply you’re just curious about what actuaries do, I hope you’ll find value here.

What to Expect

For now, I plan to post twice a week. Content will include:

  • Longer Posts on Mondays, every other week. The main topics will include actuarial science, data analysis, my college experiences, and hobbies like hitting the gym, building with LEGO bricks, and other fun things I’m into. Occasionally, I’ll also dive into books, online publications, or anything else I’ve found interesting lately.

  • Updates on my progress with actuarial exams and thoughts about my journey, published once a month. These posts will be called Actuarial Journey Updates.

  • Deep dives into some actuarial concepts, which I came across during my college studies, career, and exam preparation. These posts will be titled Actuarial Concepts and aim to make even the toughest topics easier to understand.

  • Study tips, that have helped and still help me prepare for actuarial exams. These posts will be called Study Tips.

  • Other smaller publications and updates.

Of course, in the future, the naming of posts might change, and new topics could make their way onto the blog. I’m always open to evolving and adding fresh ideas!

Feedback, Questions, and a Bit of Humor

Under each post, you’ll have the option to leave a comment. I’d love to hear your honest feedback—whether it’s suggestions, questions about the topic, or just your thoughts. I’ll do my best to respond as soon as possible.

If you find a topic particularly interesting and want to dive deeper, feel free to reach out! You can email me at erykfaracik@gmail.com or message me on LinkedIn. I’m always happy to connect and discuss.

Also, if you want to be up to date with new posts, I encourage you to sign up for the weekly update email on the blog's main page. I’m still managing it, but the goal is to send titles and short descriptions of each week’s articles.

To wrap this post with a smile and thank you for making it through, here’s some meme (yes, it’s from Lord of the Rings). I hope that the content on this blog will help Boromir change his mind…
