Use Technology - Study Tip #6

Increased tech device usage can cause more distractions but also a greater acceleration in the learning process. In this post, I will share some tips on using technology to your advantage while studying.

I think that in studying, the hardest part is to start and then stay focused on a given task. After years of studying, I believe I have built the resilience to start the process, but I still get distracted, mainly by my phone and computer.

I try to put my phone in the other corner of my room and turn on ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode, but even then—especially on days when learning feels a little tougher—I still check my phone or browse YouTube on my laptop.

One app that helped me focus was the Forest app. When I chose focus mode, I could only turn it off to launch certain apps, but doing so meant my progress wouldn’t be saved. This made it much more effective in helping me stay focused.

Many other apps, websites and hardware can help with studying, especially when tackling tough topics. Let’s explore a couple of them!

Useful Apps, Websites, and Hardware for Studying

1. Forest – Stay Focused, Avoid Distractions

Forest is a unique productivity app designed to help you stay focused. When you start a study session, you plant a virtual tree that grows as long as you remain on task.

If you exit the app to check social media or browse the web, your tree withers.

Over time, you build a forest representing your focused study sessions.

Forest is available on iOS and Android, with a browser extension for desktop users.

2. Notion – Organize Your Study Materials

Notion is an all-in-one workspace that lets you take notes, create to-do lists, and manage projects. It’s handy for students who prefer a structured approach to studying.

You can create different pages for your subjects, embed PDFs, and even use templates for efficient note-taking.

The ability to sync across multiple devices ensures that your study materials are always within reach.

Notion is available as a web app and on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.

3. Habit – Build Better Study Routines

Habit is a habit-tracking app designed to help you stay consistent with your study routine. It allows you to set study goals, track progress, and visualize your streaks.

This can be particularly useful when preparing for long-term academic goals, such as passing an actuarial exam or learning a new subject.

The app provides gentle reminders to keep you accountable and motivated.

Habit is available for both Android and iOS.

4. Noise-Canceling Headphones – Block Out Distractions

While software solutions help with focus and organization, hardware can also make a significant difference.

Noise-canceling headphones, such as the Bose QuietComfort or Sony WH-1000XM series, can help you create an optimal study environment by reducing background noise.

Pairing them with focus-friendly soundscapes, like rain noises or instrumental music, can further enhance concentration levels.

If you study in noisy environments or struggle with distractions, investing in a good pair of noise-canceling headphones can be a game-changer.

Final Thoughts

Technology can either be a distraction or a powerful tool for learning — how you use it makes all the difference.

By incorporating the right apps, websites, and devices into your study routine, you can maximize productivity and make learning more efficient.

I personally use technology all the time but in different ways. As I mentioned earlier, I sometimes scroll through social media and get distracted.

Try to find your own way of using technology to your advantage and make studying more efficient and enjoyable for yourself!
